What is ReaCH?

ReaCH, the European Chemicals Regulation (Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals [EC] No 1907/2006), is an important regulatory framework for the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals in the European market and therefore exerts considerable influence on the procurement and use of chemicals. ReaCH is a European Union regulation adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, while increasing the competitiveness of the EU chemical industry. The ReaCH system is based on the principle of industry ownership. According to the principle of no data, no market, only chemical substances that have been registered beforehand may be placed on the market within the scope. In principle, ReaCH applies to all chemical substances, i.e. not only those used in industrial processes, but also those in our daily lives, such as in cleaning products, paints and articles like clothing, furniture and electrical appliances. The regulation therefore has an impact on most companies across the EU and also on the copper industry.

Leading companies in the European copper industry have formed a consortium to work together on topics such as primary and secondary copper, slags from copper production that are sold as an end product, as well as a well-defined range of by-products (intermediates) that come from the smelting / refining and semi-finishing processes. The Kupferverband contributes its technical expertise here and is a member of numerous committees.
